Valuable points in Marta García’s debut as a professional e-racer in the W Series Esports League

20 female drivers from 15 nationalities made history yesterday by participating in the only female eSports championship, the W Series Esports League, with the first of 10 events taking place at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. García is 6th in the standings after demonstrating her great style in the first three races of the season.

The competition format includes a qualification of 10 minutes for Race 1 (15 minutes) and an identical qualifying session for Race 3 (20 minutes), while drivers line-up on a reverse grid in Race 2 (15 minutes), based on the results of Race 1.

Like the majority of the competitors, the 19 year-old Marta García discovered the iRacing platform used by the W Series Esports League in this first event. Marta found the pace to qualify in sixth place in Qualifying 1, where the pole was set by Caitlin Wood.

In Race 1, García made a good start, although she lost a few positions and battled from there, making some nice moves to cross the line in eighth place, scoring the first valuable points, after a solid demonstration by the race winner, the Dutch Beitske Visser.Race 2, presenting the reverse grid, was an action-packed show of 20 intense minutes! The Spaniard took the start from the midfield. She was able to escape an incident involving several drivers in the first chicane and displayed great form to move up to 4th place. She starred in some close battles with Gosia Rdest before finally crossing the line in 6th, having fought with the Brit Jamie Chadwick, 2019 W Series champion. The race was won by Emma Kimilainen.

Marta García qualified 8th for Race 3, where Caitlin Wood took pole once again.  Unfortunately, the Valencian driver was affected by the spin of Ayla Agren in the first chicane after the start and was forced to climb back through the field, managing to finish in 11th place.  Visser won the race ahead of another Spaniard, Nerea Martí and the Russian Ira Sidorkova, both rookies in the W Series this year.

Marta García: “It was my first ever experience on the iRacing platform and it’s only my third sim race! The race results were not the best, but I managed to score valuable points and enjoyed the close racing. So we’ll stay focused and keep training to improve now. Yesterday was a historic day, having the opportunity to join the W Series Esports League, with a 100% female racer field! Thank you everyone for making this a reality!”

Round two of the competition takes place at Circuit of the Americas, Austin, Texas, USA, next Thursday, June 18 at 7.00pm BST (8.00pm CEST). Watch all three races on BBC iPlayer, BBC Red Button, BBC Sport website and W Series’ Twitch, YouTube and Facebook channels.
